Gotta Start Somewhere...

Well, nothing to do but start.

I’ve been doing much thinking over the last year on the situation we Americans are in and I am left deeply troubled.  So much has transpired so quickly that it is more than a single man can grasp.  What I do see is the last inches of water in the tub, swirling down the drain.  Faster and faster the spiral moves, dragging down the water next to the drain but all the water in the tub is moving that way and will eventually end up down the drain.

We have a swirling sucking hole in our nation but it’s much less of a place and far more of a mindset.  Americans are not stupid.  They are not lazy as some suggest.  Most of these folks are not even uneducated.  Based on my survey of the people I meet, we are simply ignorant.

Now I’m a stickler for definitions of words and to help us understand, let’s see what that inflammatory word ignorant actually means...

ig·no·rant  adjective
1. lacking in knowledge or training; unlearned: an ignorant man.
2. lacking knowledge or information as to a particular subject or fact: ignorant of quantum physics.
3. uninformed; unaware.
4. due to or showing lack of knowledge or training: an ignorant statement.

I have highlighted items 2 and 3 because they closely describe the issue at hand.  The people I meet and talk with are lacking in any real understanding of the civics of this nation.

“A primary object should be the education of our youth in the science of government. In a republic, what species of knowledge can be equally important? And what duty more pressing than communicating it to those who are to be the future guardians of the liberties of the country?”
― George Washington

Based on the personal experience of passing through a public school system and talking to literally hundreds of Americans who also darkened the halls of a public school, I can safely say that we, as a nation, are failing to follow his sage advice.  Most folks cannot answer simple civics questions; I.e. What is the form of government of the United States?  Or what is the difference between a republic and a democracy?  I could go on but I will resist.

So, in an effort to move folks towards a competency in their own government, I am going to be writing here, sharing what I have learned and engaging in discussion on the facts of our current situation.  I challenge you to question what I say, do your own research, read dusty old books and avoid wacky websites.  As they said on the X-Files, “The truth is out there…”

Now, I don’t see myself as either an expert or a trained scholar when it comes to these things, it’s just my passion.  I want my children to live in a land that is freer than the one we live in today.  Helping my fellow humans understand the way all this is supposed to work may help this nation wake up and move back towards the intent of the Framers.  If are educated in the civics of how this works and willing to be painfully honest with themselves about how it is and how it got here, then we have a chance of saving this nation from tyranny in a somewhat peaceful manner.  If not, then we are left with a horrible choice: live as a slave or fight to be free.  It’s just that simple.

More to follow…
Oh, yes, please direct your friends and even your enemies here.  More learning is good for us all.
